Scenarist accepts valid subtitle script files with the extension .sst. A valid script file contains information on how to recreate a subtitle from a bitmap file with the appropriate color mapping details. This guide shows you how to import subtitles from script files for commercial DVD applications. In general, there is a corresponding bitmap file for each subtitle. Since each subtitle file is imported to a particular track (chapter), the starting and ending time assigned for each subtitle should be within the duration of the corresponding chapter to avoid producing errors during the import process. Each subtitle bitmap may contain up to four major color groups: BG (background), P (pattern), E1 (inner edge or emphasis 1), and E2 (outer edge or emphasis 2). This guide shows you how to make further adjustments to the colors and the contrast settings after importing, so that the subtitles will appear with the correct setting. The following screen is displayed to import the subtitle scripts.

The sample subpicture files contain more than one shade of colors for each major color group. To help Scenarist pick the color groups correctly, we need to define a range of colors to be interpreted as one of the principal colors used to display the subtitles. To define a color range, double click on the desired color in the Simulation window. The following dialog is displayed if we double click on the Bg (Color 4) background color item. This guide shows you how to make the adjustments so that colors with all color components greater than 240 are interpreted as white.
