Step 5. Save the menu mask image.
Each DVD menu requires a highlight layer so that menu buttons can be defined. A black-and-white pattern is often designed to indicate the areas of the menu button to be highlighted when the button is selected or activated. A menu button can have different colors for selection and action (activation by pressing the Enter key on the remote control). In this example, the following image is created and used as a highlight pattern mask. The highlight area can then be defined to include the text or only the highlight symbol (diamond shape). The areas covered with white pixels allow the background colors of the selected menu page to show through. The areas covered with black pixels act as a display mask to show only the selection and action colors when they are part of a menu button. From the Layer palette, make the background layer invisble and press Shift Ctrl E to merge visible all layers. This can also be done from the menu item Layer->Merge Visible as following.

To change all colors to black, click the merged layer which has the text and highlight pattern and select from the menu bar Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/Sturation to bring up the Hue/Saturation color. We should set the Lightness (luminosity) to its minimum value so that all color information are discarded. This effectively turns all colors to black as shown in the following screen shots. We can select the menu item Layer->Flatten image to convert all transparent pixels to white. We now save the image to a different file such as MenuMask.jpg to import to a Scenarist project. At this stage, we should have two image files: a background color file (Menu.jpg) and a black-and-white mask file (MenuMask.jpg).
