Sometimes it’s really frustrating. You try so hard to adjust the levels of your photo with Photoshop but it seems to be impossible to get a satisfying result. Most of the time the reason for this is the RGB color mode, which does not fit the color scheme of your picture. So in this tutorial I will show you how you can get rid of this problem by switching the color mode to LAB.

When taking your own pictures / photos for textures you always have to watch out for color casts. Indoor areas might generate warmer casts (orange, red) while outdoors cooler ones (blue, green). If these color casts make it into your final texture, they will most likely look out of place in-game and will be hard to pass off as real.

How many times have you seen a color combination that just worked, a match so perfect that it just seems obvious ? Now, how many times do you come up with those in your own work? A perfect palette looks easy when it’s done right, but it’s often maddeningly difficult and time-consuming to accomplish. Choosing effective colour schemes will always be more art than science, but there are things you can do that will make coming up with that oh-so-smooth palette just a little a bit easier. A simple trick that can lead to incredibly gratifying results lies in finding a strong photograph and sampling out particularly harmonious colors.

Choosing a colour scheme, or swatch, is one of the first things you need to do in planning a design. Thankfully Adobe provides a number of tools that make creating and managing swatches simple. How you approach colour schemes is very much a matter of personal choice but my preference is to choose five colours. Three colours are complimentary, one is a contrast and one is a highlight. The tricky part is finding colours that fulfil all of these criteria but go together as a whole. Look around you for inpiration - you might find it on an advert on a bus or on the hairclip of a barmaid. Where there is colour there is inspiration.

Open the image you want to print with spot colors on an offset or Web press. In this example, we're going to use an illustration (because it makes a great example), but you can apply this same technique to a grayscale photo that you want to print in two or more spot colors. Before we start, take a look up in the title bar of the image we have here, and you can see that it's in Grayscale mode. (See where it says Gray/8?) So, we're starting with a grayscale image, and we're going to add spot colors to it.
