There are many ways to make selections in Photoshop. I do ninety percent of mine with the regular lasso tool and Quick mask. You should experiment with the other features, but I have never had any success with the Magic Wand and find the magnetic lasso tool annoying. If you have a part of your object that has a straight edge, the polygonal lasso can be useful.

The pen tool is a very useful but often overlooked item of Photoshop. Using the pen tool allows you to create an image composed and saved in curves instead of pixels. This lets you create images and logos which are infinitely resizable to any scale with applications from posters to tiny web logos. In addition to creating vectors the pen tool is also useful for clipping images and selecting sections of a picture with a very accurate precision. This tutorial shows how to create a vector based logo from a picture with the pen tool.

There are many talented people out there that have great knowledge that they wish to share, but they fail to effectively communicate that knowledge to others. It is amazing to see a lot of generous people willing to share their knowledge with the world, but writing a Photoshop, a 3D Studio Max, or a Flash tutorial that does not make sense is a waste of your time as an author and a waste of a million other people's time that attempt to read and apply your tutorial.
The following points might sound like common sense to a great number of people, but you will be amazed by the number of tutorials that you find on the web that miss these.

At the heart of its functionality there are, of course, also tools for photo manipulation and compositing - many of which are overlooked by the casual user. The aim of this tutorial is to detail 'vector masks', a handy Photoshop feature which allows you to 'cut out' objects from their background, but without any actual loss to the original source picture. Did you know that you can add styles to masks? When applied to a mask, styles react to the luminosity instead of the transparency, allowing you to create effects that cannot be achieved on layers.
Layer effects can be applied to any layer in an image. They cannot be applied to the image background layer, if there is one. Turn the background into a regular layer if you want to apply an effect or style to it.

As a beginner you have to know that design for printing has some differences than web design or other screen designs. These are some "must-know" tips for CG people who decide to start doing some pre-press and design for printing:
* Allways use CMYK
* Black should be only 100%K, not composite from all colors
* Use minimum 300DPI for Offset and 600DPI for Digital printings.
* Clean up small composite values
* Make from 3 to 5 mm overedge on every edge that should be trimmed
* Make margins at least 5mm
* Use TIFF as the final format
