DVD-Replica is a software tool to backup and reauthor unencrypted video DVDs.
Commercial video DVDs can be converted to unencrypted video DVDs with freeware
ripping tools such as SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter. You can use this software in
conjunction with any DVD burning software of your choice, to make a backup copy
of any video DVD. You can use the freeware burning tool Burn At Once to burn
the backup copy of your DVDs.
DVD-Replica does not burn DVDs. The output from DVD-Replica is saved
as files on your hard drive, which you can then burn to a recordable DVD-R using a
separate burning (recording) software, such as Nero Burning Rom, or any recording
software provided with your DVD-R drive.
To make a backup copy of your movie DVD, you need to perform the following steps:
Step 1. Copy and decrypt the movie DVD to a local hard drive.
Most commercial DVD titles produced by major Hollywood studios are designed to
prevent typical computer users from making copies, even for your own personal need.
The first preventative measure is video data encryption. The widely used encryption
scheme known as CSS (Contents Scrambling System) prevents the original data on the
DVD to reach your local hard drive if a straight copy is done. If you manage to
perform a straight copy from an encrypted video DVD, the contents of the copied
files are not the same as the original data on the DVD, and therefore will not
play back properly. Fortunately, there are excellent freeware tools readily
available to do this task with just a few clicks.
Step 2. Fit the contents of the video DVD into one recordable DVD-R.
This problem is not so easy. Most commercial DVD video titles are about 5 to 7
gigabytes in size which are too large to fit, onto a single recordable DVD-R disk.
There are two methods to overcome this problem: reencoding and reauthoring.
Reencoding may not be desirable due to the loss of original video quality and
this process may take a long time on slower computers. Most video DVD titles
comprise of a main movie title and many extra titles such as movie trailers, director's
comments, coming attractions, etc. The main movie title may include two versions,
normal and wide screen, each version is a title on the video DVD. Reauthoring takes
advantage of this architecture and let you decide what titles to keep and what
features to discard. This approach is fast and has the advantage of keeping the
original video and audio quality of the DVD intact.
Step 3. Record the output files by DVD-Replica to your recordable media.
This is the last and easy step. Pick your favorite DVD recording software such as
Nero Burning Rom or the freeware tool Burn At Once to record the reauthored titles.

DVD-Replica provides many reauthoring functions
to let you back up a video DVD by title,
back up a video title set with menu,
split a long movie title,
groups of titles into two playable DVD-Rs,
or perform automatic splitting with a single click.
