In order to change the timezone from the command prompt, you need to edit the file /etc/sysconfig/clock and make a new copy of /etc/localtime to point to the appropriate time zone file. Here is an example of changing the timezone manually to "America/Chicago" (US Central Standard Time). The original localtime is renamed to localtime.original. The command ln -s creates a symbolic link to the time zone file stored at /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago instead of making a duplicate copy of the zone file.

[root@192.168.224.109 ~]# cd /etc
[root@192.168.224.109 etc]# ls -alh localtime
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 327 2007-10-05 17:46 localtime

[root@192.168.224.109 etc]# mv localtime localtime.original
[root@192.168.224.109 etc]# ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago localtime

[root@192.168.224.109 etc]# ls -alh localtime
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 2008-11-05 18:27 localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago

[root@192.168.224.109 etc]# date -s "2008-11-05 20:33:00"
Wed Nov 5 21:33:00 CST 2008
